What are Stretch Marks?
Stretch Marks, also known as striae, are a type of scarring on the skin caused by rapid changes in weight or body size. Most commonly stretch marks are formed during puberty, pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss, and bodybuilding. Stretch marks are caused when the layer of skin directly below the surface, known as the dermis, is torn. The dermis serves the purpose of giving the epidermis, your outer skin, shape and elasticity, but when it is over-stretched it will cause tearing which result in the scars we know as stretch marks. Normally stretch marks form as bright red or pink parallel lines and then gradually fade to white over time. Stretch marks can be treated using topical formulations aimed at fading the visibility of marks, they can also be treated surgically using a variety of available approaches. It is possible to prevent the occurrence of some stretch marks through moisturizing of the skin and dieting.
